I might have mentioned before that I seem to have accumulated a number of maps associated with aviation from WW2.

Well I chanced on another one today.

I was passing the window of a charity shop when I saw the words 'The Pacific Theatre'.

I looked closer. It is a map showing major bombing by ther allies between Oct 5 and Oct 11th in an area covering South China Sea, Java Sea, Arafura Sea, - basically New Guinea, Bornea, Celebes. The year isn't specified - indicating that it is, in all probability, an original map - probably produced as part of a situation report for top brass/politicians.

I went in and paid £5 for it - trying not to look too excited.

One particular raid is picked out - 'B-24 attack on Oil Refinery at Balikpapan.'

Time for Google.

I find: ... /44oct.htm

B-24's strike oil refineries and an A/F in Balikpapan area. The HBs and escorting P-47's and P-38's claim over 30 Japanese ftrs downed. P-38's and B-25's bomb Djailolo, Kaoe, and Hate Tabako A/F and Wasile town area. P-47's hit Liang A/F. A-20's hit Sarmi area. A-20's and B-25's bomb Urarom A/F.

B-24's again bomb oil refineries and associated industries in Balikpapan area. Others bomb Pombelaa mine. A-20's, B-25's, and FBs again hit Laha and Haroekoe A/Fs. ... 02593.html

In the Southwest Pacific, 107 Far East Air Forces B-24s escorted by 11
P-38s and 16 P-47s strike the Pendasari oil refinery and an airfield in the
Balikpapan area; this is the largest attack of the war on the oil
refineries at Balikpapan and the lubricating oil refinery is projected to
be out of action for one month. The B-24s and escorting P-47s and P-38s
shoot down 18 IJA fighters; 4 B-24s and a P-38 are lost. downed. On
Halmahera Island, P-38s and B-25s bomb Djailolo, Kaoe, and Hate Tabako
Airfield and the Wasile town area and P-47s hit Liang Airfield on Ambon
Island. In New Guinea, A-20s hit the Sarmi area and A-20s and B-25s bomb
Urarom Airfield. (Robert McFall & Jack McKillop)

Sounds like one hell of a fight...

A nice find.

There was another map in the same shop - it was an outline map of Burma, 1943 - nothing marked but features. Decided to leave it - but it must have come from the same person who owned this. Makes you wonder who they were - they obviously considered the maps important enough to keep for 60 years.

I was going to flog this one on eBay - but now I know more about it, it's going up next to my Abbeville, St Omer, and Cherbourg bombing target maps.
