Hi people :-)

It's time for a quick MA Benchmarking session I reckon :)

Quote your CPU (model and speed) and if you know it, your motherboard and chipset.
Quote your ram, amount of it (speed settings if yuo know)
Graphics card (and if you've got it overclocked, the ram and core speeds)
Sound card

Then, boot 1946 and set the resolution to 1280x960 in 32bit colout. Make sure you've got everything in the main game graphics settings maxed, in OpenGL, with Perfect setting for ground, BUT put Clouds to Medium (as thats the lowest you can use in a dogfight server)

Choose Play Track from main menu, and choose Black Death. Keep the toogle switches UP for Loop, Down for time and view control (that's OFF) and UP for the bottom one.

Play the track, and as soon as it starts, push SHIFT and TAB.

Type (without the quotes) "fps START SHOW" making sure to use those lower case and upper case as i've typed it.

Hit SHIFT and TAB again, and it'll continue the track.

Leave the track to run through for about 15 -20 minutes, and take a note of the MAX FPS and the AVERAGE FPS. Ignore the Minimum as it often drops to 1 when you type in the command line.

Then do the same on the KAMIKAZE track as it has a lot of water. 15-20 minutes, and note the frame rates.

THen post it all here :) Dont be shy.....doesnt matter if it's immensely fast or uber slow :)

Nuts...could you run that with Vsync enabled? Just to bring the Average back down to whatever it would be then.

Also, would you knock the res down to something much lower and see what the average goes too?

Still trying to figure just what sort of a CPU load this game is.

Cheers chap.

Max: 79 (vsync didnt do a very good job there!)
Avg: 68

Bear in mind that's max graphical details and even 3d gunners turned on!

Hat...it's V sync, which is the thing that stops the card refreshing any faster than you're monitors refresh rate..

BUT it's there to keep the screen from "tearing" when you swivel your head round fast, so is best kept on. Lets face it, 60 fps (most TFT's are between 60 and 75hx refresh), 60 frams per second is smooth.

Its the dips that bring the average down that I'm interested in.

Nuts for example has a nuclear reactor for a PC, with a beast cpu and a monster card.

So his maximum frame rate with vsync off was sky high (as was mine in places) but it doesnt help game play really.

think it's time for an overclock there Clingy? They run quite well at faster speeds :)

I like running cool and quiet ;)

Did do a bit early on, but got confused with the memory timings. The GFX is nice and easy to clock

vsync ON at 75Hz (Just changed to this from 60)

Changed my settings according to your post, yet left conf.ini unchanged at....

3dgunners=1
TypeClouds=1
Water=1
Sky=2
Forest=2
LandShading=3
LandDetails=2
Shadows=2

The black death
Max: 80
Avg: 63

Kamikaze02
Max: 77
Avg: 58

Rates didnt seem to drop when all the 3d gunners came into view as the carrier floated by.. but seemed to do so on the long shots of the smoking carrier near the end

Funny thing though now, is that the sound distorts on flak bursts.. so am gonna change it back to what I had before..

The PC specs are all listed in the "Time for a new PC thread" :)

Reason I'm interested in this, (again) is because this game still needs more CPU power than video power.

I did this:

1280x960 x32 v sync set at 60
Kamikaze:
Average 44 Max 62

1024x768 x32 v sync set at 60
Kamikaze:
Average 45 Max 62

800x600 x32 v sync set at 60
Kamikaze:
Average 48 Max 62

Normally, in most games you'd see a good frame rate increase by dropping the resolution that far, becaue the low frame moments would be lessened, and mayne not arrive at all. But not in this game. OK, if V sync was off, the frame rates would go sky high, and bring the average back up, but the lows would still be low.

The cpu is still calculating most of the imagery I think? Nuts...what do you think?
If any of you Core2Duo boys would be kind and run the same settings exactly that you prefer on all tests, but keep dropping the resolution.

And you must let it run all the way through, cos they all start high...but by the time the Kamikaze attacjs start, the frames drops...and drops...and drops. By the time the Bomber swirls into the sea, mine is on it's knees again ;)

Zak.. IL2 has always needed more cpu than gpu, and always will as long as it uses dx8 or opengl.. why does this always come as a surprise to you? :S

I've got a c2d system, if somone provides a link for the black death track I'll give it a go sometime.

cos the games not moved on, but CPU's have, and I'd have thuoght that we'd have technically caught up with the bugger by now.

But nope....even with a monster twin core C2D at over 3 gig, Nut's still dips below 60.

Catch up with what?

It's the software (i.e. IL2) that needs to catch up with the hardware, not the other way round. DX8 is 7 years old. The only way IL2 will 'catch up' is a complete bin and rewrite from near enough scratch.

If the software instructs to use the CPU, the CPU get's used.. the machine can't just decide "Oh, I'll use the GPU instead."

hey, I agree...but when I say catchup, I mean this:

Most people agree that a minimum playable frame rate is about 30 fps. Do you guy's agree? Minimum. I'd much rather see over 40fps.

But we still see frame rates drop quite a lot below that....as you say...7 years later.

I understand the Dx8.1 to Dx9 and 10 difference, but surely, by now, we'd have got to a stage where the game can run consistently at over 40fps

My prefered minimum for game's is 50 tbh. Any less and I start getting headaches from the jumpyness/jerkyness

in my eternal quest for the ragged edge of this game....I'm gonna upgrade.

Just to see.,......see if I can max out my video card with CPU power.

I don't think the games relativly poor performance has a too direct relationship to it using (earlier) ogl. There's a tremendous pattern in Russian games of poor performance.

Aye, that's most likely down to rushed development. However I was highlighting that todays hardware is not very good at running yesterdays software.

I'll have a play 2nite with the affinity settings and see how much the cores effect the frame rate...

Only ran it on my x32 XP machine.
I could always run it again under Vista 64 but I doubt it would be any faster as Vista quite frankly sucks assring..

XP64 might be a better option?!
