X800 XT fan stopped

Post by MA_DanglyBob »

Started to get some glitches and so opened up the case...
realised that I hadn't had a clean out in a while and everything is choked in dust.

so a quick cleanup later and I realise that the gfx fans stopped.
replugged all conns, but it seems to be dead.
Thinking about it, it was making a few funny noises a couple of weeks back, seemed to be running at 100% every 10 secs, due to the dust building up I expect. Meant to investigate, but whne the noise stopped, I stopped worrying... :D

Anyways.. Looked at aftermarket coolers, seems to be a choice between and arctic or zalman.
Which is better, and more importantly easier to fit....

At the mo, I've got a 3 inch fan sellotaped over the old one, producing enough force to propel the old fan and provide enough air to keep the card to below 40°, although it rises to 75+ when running anything to stress it even lightly..

I went for a silencer in the end, saw one on special offer.

It turned up, and it's a huge thing.
Old one was fairly easy to take off, cleaned up the old thermal paste and fitted the new one.

Now, for some unknown reason, Asus has decided that they will fit a different type of fan plug/socket to their cards, so I had to chop and solder plugs.
fitted the card and realised that it's not the fan at fault, but summat wrong with the power supply to the fan socket..... Doh...
So I pulled out some bits and after a bit more soldering, fitted a bog standard plug and its now running via a pot and a standard fan supply off the mobo.

Pretty quiet at 100% anyway, so thats how I'll leave it. keeps the GPU down to 45 during load at standard clocking.

45 at loads pretty good, my HD3850 hits abot 80oC at full 3D load, mind you I really need to sort my case out as the Q6600 hits 43oC at idle.... :rox:

Holy thread resurrection Batman.

Must be the same one, haven't bought another since.
Doing well still though Thx.

Funny, just read through the post above, don't remember doing any of that...

Best I open the case again for another clean...
