Finally.. a new graphics card!

Post by MA_Hat »

Out of necessity.. and on a very tight budget..........

My 64mb Ti4200 packed up this morning....fan had stopped spinning. and the thing cooked with rather strange on screen results...

So... for sixty quid... ( had to buy one today) .. PC World... ( yeah yeah I know.. but.. thats one thing they ARE good at.. and thats having stuff in stock on the shelf when you need it urgently) bought myself a PNY GeForce6 6200 256mb..

Im sure its not up to you guys screen perfect stuff... but i cant wait to try it out online!!

I also like the fact that its half the size and doesnt have a fan.. fits in much better inside me shuttle!

Any tips as to how I should alter my config?

dont be tempted to go too high on resolution. Stick at 1024x768.

Then bring stuff up in quality gently...few moves at a time. he frame buffer size will help a lot.

1024 x 768 is good for me.. what about all the rest of the gubbins?

dont bother with AA or AF yet. Just try the game settings. Try water at 1 in config...see if it can deal with it!

well... my main aim is at least 30fps in all situations and a good dogfighting setup. Need to be able to see and identify planes as early as possible primarily.. then ground targets next... then eye candy comes later.

I notice how the fps really drops when fliiping on the mirror... noticed that there are 2 mirror modes?

OK, I'm a nOOb when it comes to cards. I have an ATI 9250, 256 MB. I'm thinking of getting a 9800pro, 128 MB. Right now I can get on for $150 US.

Is it worth it?

That's like 90 GBP, if I didn't want the damn thing now, I would take you up on it.

Dunno the differences between the 9250 and the 9800pro but even tho the 9250 is 256Mb and the 9800Pro's 128Mb I would of thought the 9800 would run rings around the 9250, wait till Zak gets here he'll know more or maybe have a link to Hexus somewhere there might compare the two...

9800 Pro is far far superior to a 9250.

It has a wholely more modern core, faster with more texture pipelines, quicker ram (size is not always what ya want ;))

ATI (and to a lesser extent nVidia) as bloody aweful at rebadging things to confuse.

I cant find any proper realistic reviews on 9250's but I know the core speed was SLOWER than 9200's and it was a marketing model, not a real move up.

Rias uses an old Radeon 9000 OEM with 128mb DDR and although it is a slow core and ram,it is very nice in IL-2 and hugely better than the 9200 LE that I have here as a spare card.

I'd say the 9800 Pro is one of the last 18 months best value cards bar none. I had one and it was awesome.

Be worth waiting a few extra days and getting that from Trig imho
